AbstractThere has been a significant increase in research into assistive devices for people with cognitive disabilities. The majority of this research has focused on the development of devices for younger adults who have learning impairments or brain injury. These devices have not been acceptable for use by older adults who have dementia. This paper will provide an overview of how the principles of context-aware design may be applied to the design of future assistive devices to make them suitable for older adults with dementia. Several examples of devices specifically designed for this population will be provided. Keywords: assistive devices; context-aware; design; dementia; older adults; elderly
