AbstractCurrently hundreds of devices are available to assist people who are visually impaired. This article discusses some of the technologies available in the areas of communication, daily living and mobility that attempt to meet the needs of elderly persons with visual restrictions. The potential to reduce barriers and increase access to self-managed activities is discussed, with emphasis on the gap between the availability of the technologies and the ability of the aging population to make use of them.Keywords: low vision; blind; assistive technology; mobility; communication
